Did you know that, added up across the country, household leaks can waste nearly one trillion gallons of water every year? And whether it’s a silent toilet leak or an under-sink pipe drip, your home could be contributing to that leak statistic without you even realizing it! Common leaks inside the home are usually caused by a worn toilet flapper or loose pipe or fixture connections. Luckily, these are easy and quick for any homeowner to repair—and by doing so, you can save on your water bills.

Madison Water Utility adheres to the highest state and federal drinking water standards. We routinely collect more samples and run more tests than are actually required by the EPA and DNR — thousands of tests every year. Those test results are reflected in our Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, showing Madison’s water once again meets or exceeds all federal and state standards for health and safety.

They are not considered heroes, but they walk into strangers’ houses, unaware of any dangers that may exist due to COVID-19. They work long hours, many times weekends, to make sure that we have running, hot water to bathe in, heat in our homes, and sterilized essential equipment. Plumbers are so much more than faucet fixers and drain uncloggers; they use more science and math than most of us do in our jobs. They don’t use spreadsheets to calculate a math problem, they use tape measures and their craftiness, fitting things in spaces they should not be able to fit. They problem solve. They work on science projects and make shit work, no pun intended. It is times like this that make you think about what’s important.

The Cranfield nanomembrane toilet – how it works…

Published on Oct 20, 2016

Here at Cranfield we are developing the Nano Membrane Toilet which will be able to treat human waste on-site without external energy or water. The Cranfield toilet is designed for single-household use (equivalent to 10 people) and will accept urine and faeces as a mixture. The Cranfield toilet is still under development; this is the vision of how it will work: The Cranfield toilet flush uses a unique rotating mechanism to transport the mixture into the Cranfield toilet without using any water whilst simultaneously blocking odour and the user’s view of the waste.

The best ways to save water is by replacing inefficient appliances and fixtures, and changing your lifestyle. By committing to both, families can reduce water usage by 50% or more.  Here are 3 tips to get you started:

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
  • Wash vegetables and fruits in a large bowl and scrub them with a vegetable brush.
  • Insulate your water pipes. This will allow the water to heat faster while avoiding wasted water.
